Water Supply and Demand Planning
(Basic Plan for Water Resources Development in the Kiso River System)

The Basic Plan for Water Resources Development in the Kiso River System was developed and approved in a cabinet meeting in June 2004. The Plan presents the water demand forecast and specifies the supply goal by water use until 2015 in Nagano, Gifu, Aichi and Mie Prefectures that rely on the Kiso River System for water use.

The Plan estimates that the demand for municipal water will be about 69 m3 per second in view of the improvement of living and industrial infrastructure, use of other sources than groundwater to control ground settlement, effective water use and water supply capacity of the river system. To meet the demand, water supply facilities will be improved to enable stable water supply according to the regional conditions based on the recent changes in river regime due to precipitation and other factors. The facilities together with those improved earlier are expected to provide water to meet the demand for municipal use in 2015 at a rate of approximately 113 m3 per second on the assumption of the river regime at the time when the Plan was developed. The rate will be approximately 77 m3 per second on the assumption of the river regime in the year with the second worst drought in the past 20 years, or 51 m3 per second based on the assumption of the river regime during the worst drought of 1994 (3. Water Shortage in the Kiso River System).

The Nagaragawa Estuary Barrage provides water at a rate of 22.5 m3 per second, approximately 20% of municipal water supply (water resources developed).
