Administration and Safety of Dams (Country Focused Training Course)

Japan Water Agency started ”Administration and Safety of Dams (Country Focused Training Course)” from this year. This training course targets for those who are working for the Ministry Irrigation in Syria. This year, seven trainees attended the training course. The whole period of the course was 23 days from from December 21 to December.
In Syria, the average annual rainfall is around 250mm, to secure enough water resources, there are more less or less one hundred seventy dams which are under construction and survey. But since the failure of Zeyzoun Dam in June 2002, the awareness of the safe dam management has been rising rapidly, then it was decided to kick off this course to transfer the safety dam maintenance technique from Japan to Syria.
In the first half of the training was allocated to the lectures, then they visited many types of JWA dams. They were Nagara Dam (Earth), Kusaki Dam (Gravity), Yagisawa Dam (Arch), Urayama Dam (Gravity), Takizawa Dam (Gravity : Under test filling), Agigawa Dam (Rock-fill) and Tokuyama Dam (Rock-fill : Under construction). At Agigawa Dam, they sampled water from the river and checked the plankton in the sample with the microscope. They seemed to be deeply impressed with the thorough and accurate dam management and feel the necessity of the safe dam management in Syria.
This training course will last for another two years, we’ll try to our best to do the better training.
