Agreement on the criterion for compensation of Koishiwaragawa dam project concluded between residents and JWA

Today, Koishiwaragawa dam project takes a large step toward construction stage. A group organized by residents living in the submerged area of this dam project and Japan Water Agency (JWA) signed and concluded the agreement of the criterion of assets and resettlement compensation.
The signing ceremony with around 130 participants of residents, organization concerned and JWA was held in Asakura City, Fukuoka, Kyushu.
Mr. AOYAMA Toshiki, President of JWA, expressed his appreciation to all persons concerned, especially to the residents who had been cooperated with the project implementation, and the leader of the residents expressed the continuous supports for their resettlement, which were followed by congratulatory speeches delivered by many guests.
Based on this agreement, the contract of compensation with each resident will be progressed one by one, and the project will enter the construction stage.

Overview of Koishiwarwagawa dam

In the LOI, ADB and JWA:

  • - Type: Rock-fill dam
  • - Height: 129m (elevation of crest: EL359m)
  • - Crest length: 504m
  • - Total reservoir capacity: around 40 million m3
  • - Project cost: Yen 196 billion
  • - Project period: March 2016
  • - Objectives: Flood control, Water supply, maintenance of river environment and emergency water against severe drought
  • - Location: Asakura City and Toho Village, Fukuoka pref. Japan (Chikugo River system)

Progress of Koishiwaragawa dam project

  • - 1980. Launching the pre-study
  • - 1993. Recognition as the comprehensive water resources management plan of Chikugo river (the full plan)
  • - 2004. Completion of proceeding of the Environmental Impact Assessment

It was recognized as one of the projects in line with “the Full-Plan”, so-called, the comprehensive water resources development program approved by the national cabinet in March 2006.
Around 28 years passed since project pre-study was launched in 1980.
