Mobilizing the Staff and an Apparatus for Desalination to Chichijima Island of Ogasawara Islands, about 1,000km south-southeast of Tokyo

February 16, 2017

Chichijima Island of Ogasawara Village of Tokyo is situated in the Pacific Ocean, about 1,000 km away from Tokyo. In this island the drought has been progressing since last fall. If no or little rainfall continues, the water source of this island will dry up. Under this severe situation, Ogasawara Village asked for a help from Japan Water Agency (=JWA). To meet with this request, JWA promptly decided to mobilize an moveable desalination apparatus with operating staff for the technical guidance to the island.

The moveable desalination apparatus is used to change the sea water into drinking water. This apparatus was used for the disaster-beaten areas in the past. At this island, this is the second time to provide water supply support.

The staff is to be dispatched today (on February 16) and to stay for four days until February 20 and they will conduct the operation training for local staff members. After the training, the trained local people will keep the water supply work for some more days.

This desalination apparatus is capable of producing 50m3 of water per day, equivalent to the home use for 200 people. In an emergency case, this apparatus enables us to provide approx. 16,000 people with drinking water, which will alleviate the water shortage in this village.
