Refreshing the Downstream of River Bed to help Environmental Improvement at Takayama Dam

April 25, 2017

At Takayama Dam, which Kizukawa Dam Integrated Operation and Maintenance Office manages, flashing discharge will be made on May 9 from 9:30 till 12:30. Flashing discharge will be made twice a year this year from the crest gates (the gates installed at the bank crest). The purpose of this operation is to lower the water level of the downstream river to be prepared for coming rainy season (June to July) and possible typhoon attack.
The discharge of this year will be made with temporarily increasing water volume from the dam to help remove the mud and algae adhered to the rocks and stones of the river downstream, so that the river is refreshed to have better water quality to provide better environment for living water creatures.

But please be reminded that the water level will be gradually raised as the discharge from the dam is performed. On the day of discharge warning announcement will be broadcast as well as a siren sounding a little before the start of discharge from the gates. River patrol will also be made along the increase of the discharge amount.

*The similar flashing discharge operation is to be conducted at Hitokura Dam in Hyogo Prefecture, Hinachi Dam in Mie Prefecture just in the beginning of May, 2017, and Agigawa Dam in the middle of May, 2017.
