Japan Dam Award 2017 was held at Tokyo Culture Culture in Shibuya, Tokyo on December 17, 2017 by Japan Dam Award Selection Committee, consisting of dam enthusiasts and the winners for the following five awards were disclosed. And
Terauchi Dam, managed by Japan Water Agency (=JWA) located in Fukuoka Prefecture was awarded for
the Grand Award, with the selected reason behind was its
contribution to the mitigation of damages caused by the torrential rain in Fukuoka Prefecture.
The selection criteria for the above awards are set by the committee, as follows:
| Discharge Award |
This award is given to the dam which made the most impressive discharge of the year. This award is to recognize the vitalization effort made for the dam site community and dam practitioners in the area of tests, inspections, and discharge opportunities. |
| Event Award |
This award is given to the dam which held the most impressive event among the dams with dam practitioners’ involvement of the year. This award is to recognize the vitalization effort for the event sponsored by the dam practitioner. |
| Low Water Management Award |
This award is given to the dam which conducted the most impressive low water management (water utilization supply) of the year. |
| Flood Control Award |
This award is given to the dam which conducted the most impressive flood control operation of this year. |
| Grand Award |
This award is given to the dam which conducted the most impressive work among the dams nominated for the above four awards of the year. |
Dams are indispensable for our lives in that they secure
the flood control,
domestic water supply and
power generation, etc. However, it is the fact that various dam's performances in the area of flood and drought mitigation is
not widely reported on mass media. Putting this fact in mind, dam enthusiasts formed the committee to play the role of disclosing such important activities of dams for publicity and
revitalize and encourage the dam industry, in an effort of increasing the
awareness of dam's functions and effects among the general public.
