Lake Biwa is Japan's largest lake with
an annual precipitation of some 1,700 mm in its watershed.
The rainwater running down approximately 460 rivers, which
eventually flow into the lake, finds its only exit in the
Seta River.
A one centimeter rise in the water level
of Lake Biwa translates into an increase of 6.7 million cubic-meters
of water.
Lake
Biwa and Yodo River watershed area
A part from Lake Biwa, water from the
surrounding rivers also run into the Uji River, the Katsura
River, the Kizu River and the Yodo River.
Lake
Biwa and Yodo River water feed area
The Kinki region supplies some 14 million
of its population of 20 million with water from Lake Biwa.
It is in effect an immense water reservoir that supplies
water for a large area starting from its upstream areas
to the downstream region that encompasses Kansai International
Airport and its surroundings.
