Roles of the Nagaragawa Estuary Barrage

Flood Control

The prevention of intrusion of saltwater through the Nagaragawa Estuary Barrage makes large-scale dredging possible and allows floods on the Nagaragawa River to flow down safely (design flooding discharge: 7,500 m3/sec).

Water Use

The water upstream from the barrage is desalinated, and the resulting fresh water is made available as tap water and for industrial use, at a rate of 22.5 m3/sec maximum for Aichi Prefecture, Mie Prefecture and Nagoya City.
