Roles of the Nagaragawa Estuary Barrage

Increased Reliability of Water Supply

Before completion of the Nagaragawa Estuary Barrage, water supplies drawn from the river downstream of the mound were often affected by the intrusion of saltwater intruding from the sea as a consequence of bed degradation due to land subsidence. In the case of the Kita Ise industrial water supply system, a second intake was constructed to withdraw fresh water, but the water supply thus made available was not reliable. After the Nagara Estuary Barrage went into full operation, the water upstream of the barrage was desalinized so that fresh water could be drawn in a reliable way.

Kita Ise industrial water supply system (water right supply: 2.951 m3/s)
Fukuhara Canal (water right supply: 0.256 m3/s)
Nagashima-cho, Kuwana City water supply system, irrigation water and channel maintenance water(water right supply: 1.22 m3/s)

In the case of the Nagara River Canal, which used to draw water upstream of the mound, the Nagara Estuary Barrage has stabilized the water level, making it possible to take in water from the river section upstream of the barrage in a reliable way.
