Iwaya Dam in Gifu Prefecture won the Grand Award and Flood Control Award for "Japan Dam Award 2018"

For 2018,
Iwaya Dam was given the Flood Control Award and Grand Award, which is given to the dam which conducted the most impressive work among all the nominated dams for six awards of the year. The reason Iwaya Dam was selected for the Grand Award was the great contribution of the dam in the area of disaster prevention with proper dam operation, maximizing its capacity at the time of torrential rain in July 2018.

What is Japan Dam Award?
Reviewing various activities of the dams in Japan in the year, the committee consisting of selected dam enthusiasts nominates some dams for respective categories* from various different angles and finally those members and others participated in the final round of the selection process pick up the winners by vote in terms of the most outstanding work performed in each category.

The reasons behind the establishment of the dam awards
Dams are indispensable for our lives in that they secure the flood control, domestic water supply and power generation, etc. However, it is the fact that various dam's performances in the area of flood and drought mitigation is not widely reported on mass media. Putting this fact in mind, dam enthusiasts formed the committee to play the role of disclosing such important activities of dams for publicity and revitalize and encourage the dam industry, in an effort of increasing the awareness of dam's functions and effects among the general public.
