First Landside Water Drainage Operation in the Reiwa Era Implemented at Musashi Canal
(* May 2019 is the start of new Japanese Calendar of Reiwa) 28 May, 2019

Heavy rainfall was recorded from 7 p.m. of 20 May, 2019 through 2 p.m. of 21 May, 2019 in the surroundings of Musashi Canal in Gyoda City and Konosu City of Saitama Prefecture caused by the strong rain front. The total rainfall amount reached 77mm according to the Kumagaya Meteorological Office.
Responding to the flooding caused by this rainfall, Tone Canal Management and Construction Office of Japan Water Agency conducted the drainage operation of landside water at Musashi Canal. In particular, at the two sluice gates and 6 dewatering outlets, water from the rivers and surrounding areas were taken into the canal and delivered down to Ara River for drainage.
The total amount of drainage water accumulated to 580,000m³ between 11:15 a.m. on 21 May and 6 p.m. on the same day. This amount is equivalent to roughly the half of Tokyo Dome Baseball Stadium (1,240,000 m³)
This drainage operation directly prevented the flood disaster in the surroundings of Musashi Canal, namely reducing the water level of roughly 0.42m at Kawazura Gate of Moto-Ara River and 0.78m at Sama Gate of Oshi River.
