Test Filling has started at Koishibarakawa Dam 7 February, 2020

Koishibarakawa Dam is now under construction on the Koishibara River of the Chikugo River system in the northern Kyushu city of Asakura in Fukuoka Prefecture. It is a multi-purpose rockfill dam, aiming at flood control, maintenance of normal functions of water flow (to include emergency water supply at the time of extraordinary drought) and utilization of newly developed water.

The test filling started at the reservoir on 14th of December 2019 in advance of the full-scale operation. This process is required to confirm the safety of the dam body and the surroundings of the reservoir with actual storage of water.
At the time of the trial filling at Koishibarakawa Dam, water is filled up to the point of highest flood level or surcharge water level, then lowered to the level where safety of the surroundings of the reservoir is confirmed.
When completed, the dam height will be 139m (the highest among the dams in Kyushu) and the dam will be able to store 40,000,000m3 of water, which will be equivalent to 23 units of “ Fukuoka paypay Dome ”. The dam will be capable of “mitigation of flood damage”, “security of domestic water”, “maintenance of normal functions of water flow”, and “supply of emergency water at the time of extraordinary drought”.
