Aichi Canal-Cultivating culture along with water 60th anniversary 21 September, 2021

Outline of the project

Aichi Canal mainly sourced from Makio Dam in Nagano Prefecture, and is intended to provide a stable supply of irrigation water, domestic water and industrial water for the area from “chuunou” (central) region in Gifu Prefecture to the eastern Owari and Chita regions in Aichi Prefecture.Water conveyance started in 1961. To respond to (1) changes in water usage patterns and (2) aging facilities, Aichi Canal Second Stage project was implemented from 1981 to 2006, and the full reconstruction of waterway facilities and accumulated sediment removal on Makio Dam were carried out.

The Effect of Aichi Canal project

From unstable farming fully dependent on rainwater to planned farming business

Currently supplies irrigation water to approx.15,000 ha of farmland in 18 cities and 9 towns extended from “Chuno” (central) region in Gifu Prefecture to eastern Owari and Chita regions in Aichi Prefecture. Thanks to a stable supply of irrigation water, highly profitable and planned vegetable farming, greenhouse horticulture and pomiculture turned out to work in the region with increased agricultural output.

Before Aichi Canal was built, people in Chita Peninsula had hard time taking water for farming because of no accessible large rivers in that region. So people there had to brace for drought, digging wells and building irrigation ponds.

Aichi Prefecture has many agricultural produce that hold No.1 position in terms of production amount. Many of the major producing areas fall on the beneficiary areas of Aichi Canal. Some examples are listed as below:

Commemorative Card of Aichi Canal for its 60th anniversary of water conveyance

Aichi Canal has been in service for 60 years since its start of water conveyance on 30 September, 1961. So, for the purpose of reminding us of the importance of water, gratitude for the water source, succession of the feats of our predecessors, and the importance of Aichi water, we have issued the commemorative card of Aichi Canal for its 60th anniversary of water conveyance.
For the past 60 years, we have endeavored to provide a stable supply of irrigation water, domestic water, and industrial water, yet Aichi Canal will continue to contribute to the safety, security, and development of the region for the future.
