‘Preservation of the Natural Environment
The proper steps have been taken throughout the development of Lake Biwa to limit the effect on the natural environment and preserve the traditional landscape and valuable cultural assets.
Preservation and Creation of the Foreshore
Ž©‘R‘O•l lH‘O•l
In the North Lake, a foreshore abundant in nature was secured on the lakeside of the lake levee. Not only is the foreshore vital for all living creatures, it also mitigates the high waves during flooding.
In the South Lake, a new wide foreshore was developed on the lakeside of the lake levee, all the while preserving the natural environment.
The engineered foreshore, which is planted with trees and flowers, features a relaxing beach.
Phragmites Planting
ƒˆƒVAΝ With regard to the phragmites zone that was inevitably lost as a result of the lake levee construction, new phragmites were planted to the lakefront in efforts to restore the phragmites site.
Water-friendly (Rubble-mound) Revetments
ƒAƒ†ŽY—‘—plH‰Νμ Rubble-mound revetments were constructed as breakwaters to lake levees not having either the engineered or natural foreshore.
